Advisory Board

Steven J. Smith is a transformational global CEO and humanitarian innovator recognized for building and scaling mission-driven organizations that unite the aviation industry, logistics partners, and NGOs to deliver life-saving aid worldwide. With over two decades of experience at the intersection of aviation, global development, and cross-sector partnership, Steve has established himself as one of the foremost leaders in humanitarian logistics and purpose-driven enterprise growth.

As President & CEO of Airlink, Steve transformed a fledgling nonprofit into a $20M+ global humanitarian logistics enterprise, delivering over 16.5 million pounds of aid and deploying 13,000 responders to support more than 60 million people affected by conflict, natural disasters, and health crises. He built an extensive coalition spanning 50+ airlines, 250 NGOs, and hundreds of corporate and government partners, positioning Airlink as a central player in global disaster response and supply chain coordination.

Under his leadership, Airlink expanded from a one-person startup to a globally recognized operation with an Asia-Pacific outpost, a robust governance structure, and a high-performing board. Steve has guided major crisis response efforts — from Ebola and COVID-19 to Ukraine and other complex emergencies — while advancing new models for humanitarian localization and sustainability.

Before joining Airlink, Steve held senior commercial roles with Rolls-Royce, where he led high-value campaigns within the Civil Aerospace division. He directed transatlantic teams and negotiations for landmark aviation deals, including a $4B+ engine and services contract
— the largest in the company’s history — and a $900M, 30-year global services agreement with a leading international carrier. These achievements honed his ability to drive strategic growth, orchestrate complex partnerships, and deliver measurable outcomes across continents.

Steve’s earlier experience at ACCORD, a leading conflict management NGO based in South Africa, included directing a $36M international fundraising initiative to advance peacebuilding, mediation, and sustainable development across Africa.

Throughout his career, Steve has been recognized for combining commercial acumen with humanitarian purpose — leveraging systems-level thinking to align mission, market, and measurable impact. A Presidential Leadership Scholar (2023), Air Transport World Hall of Fame honoree (2024), and Aviation News “40 Under 40” recipient (2018), Steve is a trusted advisor to boards, governments, and industry leaders working to advance global resilience and responsible innovation.

He currently serves on the Boards of InterAction and the Aero Club of Washington, and is a frequent keynote speaker, podcast host, and thought leader on aviation’s role in humanitarian aid, global logistics, and sustainable development.

Steve earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he was a varsity athlete and award-winning member of the golf team.
